A Concise History Of The Netherlands

by James C. Kennedy, A Concise History Of The Netherlands Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Concise History Of The Netherlands book, The Netherlands is known among foreigners today for its cheese and its windmills, its Golden Age paintings and its experimentation in social policies such as cannabis and euthanasia. Yet the historical background for any of these quintessentially Dutch achievements is often unfamiliar to outsiders. This concise history offers an overview of this surprisingly little-known but fascinating country. Beginning with the first humanoid settlers, the book follows the most important contours of Dutch history, from Roman times through to the Habsburgs, the Dutch Republic and the Golden Age. The author, a modernist, pays particularly close attention to recent developments, including the signature features of contemporary Dutch society. In addition to being a political history, this overview also gives systematic attention to social and economic developments, as well as in religion, the arts and the Dutch struggle against the water. The Dutch Caribbean is also included in the narrative.

Luther Und Die Reformation In Internationalen Geschichtskulturen

by Roland Bernhard, Luther Und Die Reformation In Internationalen Geschichtskulturen Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Luther Und Die Reformation In Internationalen Geschichtskulturen book, Was schreiben Schulbücher zum Thema Reformation? What do school textbooks say about the Reformation? How do they interpret the work of Martin Luther? How do they portray the role of the Catholic Church and how do museums, novels and other manifestations of its historical culture deal with the topic? This book reflects the answers to these questions in light of history-didactic discourse. It also shows how formerly socialist countries rediscovered the subject after 1989/1991 and, with two Asian points of view, notes the global dimension of the reception of this topic, which was formerly viewed from a predominantly Western perspective. In this sense, this volume plays its part in enriching history lessons from multiple perspectives.

Narratives Of Justice In And Out Of The Courtroom

by Dubravka Zarkov, Narratives Of Justice In And Out Of The Courtroom Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Narratives Of Justice In And Out Of The Courtroom book, This volume considers the dynamic relations between the contemporary practices of international criminal tribunals and the ways in which competing histories, politics and discourses are re-imagined and re-constructed in the former Yugoslavia and beyond. There are two innovative aspects of the book - one is the focus on narratives of justice and their production, another is in its comparative perspective. While legal scholars have tended to analyze transitional justice and the international war tribunals in terms of their success or failure in establishing the facts of war crimes, this volume goes beyond mere facts and investigates how the courts create a symbolic space within which competing narratives of crimes, perpetrators and victims are produced, circulated and contested. It analyzes how international criminal law and the courts gather, and in turn produce, knowledge about societies in war, their histories and identities, and their relations to the wider world. Moreover, the volume situates narratives of transitional justice in former Yugoslavia both within specific national spaces - such as Serbia, and Bosnia - and beyond the Yugoslav. In this way it also considers experiences from other countries and other times (post-World War II) to offer a sounding board for re-thinking the meanings of transitional justice and institutions within former Yugoslavia. Included in the volume's coverage is a look at the Rwandan tribunals, the trials of Charles Taylor, Radovan Karadzic, the Srebrenica genocide, and other war crimes and criminals in the Yugoslav. Finally, it frames all of those narratives and experiences within the global dynamics of legal, social and geo-political transformations, making it an excellent resource for social science researchers, human rights activists, those interested in the former Yugoslavia and international relations, and legal scholars.
